Innovative model

Operation ASHA focuses on patient convenience and community mobilization. In order to utilize the most of available resources, we work with the government to bring free TB medicines to the doorsteps of the most disadvantaged patients. The entire model is based on the following 14 simple yet essential points:

1. Internationally accepted standard DOTS therapy, DOTS (Directly Observed Therapy- Short Course) was developed by World Health Organization. Its implementation has led to a rapid decrease in the prevalence of TB around the world.

2. Close coordination with National TB Program (RNTCP), Government of India, State TB Officers, District TB Officers, WHO TB Consultants, Treatment Supervisors and Laboratory Supervisors

3. Dense network of treatment Centers are located in strategically selected, high-traffic community places. They run extended operating hours based on specific community needs.

4. Leverage trusted community leaders Involving leaders such as priests, traditional healers to work as DOTS providers helps spread key messages to their community.

5. Rapid response testing and family counseling and education of immediate circle (e.g. family members and neighbors) of identified patients to help decrease the incidence of tuberculosis.

6. Corps of highly-trained, full-time counselors  ensures patient compliance, and reduces default, helping "turn off the tap" to drug resistant tuberculosis.

7. Provision of over-the-counter drugs to treat the side effects of TB drugs and provide camouflage to patients who may be stigmatized due to having TB.

8. Performance-based remuneration for counselors. This has proved very effective in achieving excellent results.

9. Robust feedback loop involving government officers from field level to state level ensuring proper adherence to duty and protocol by our staff.

10. Stringent quality control ensured via internal and external audits.

11. Free treatment for patients. In urban slums, Operation ASHA spends only $25 per patient.  This covers the enitre cost of a 7 month treatment regime.

12. Financial Sustainability is achieved at each center within two years of commissioning thanks to a Government of India program.

13. Biometric devices are utilized for automated compliance tracking.

14. Process based operation with detailed manuals, to ensure rapid replication
